Hopefully useful! For those who are trying it out or considering it as an option. It is very different to tumblr, and though there is image uploading it’s limited (but you can embed via other hosting sites like imgur or tinypic etc, so it’s the same as posting art, vids, or podfic to AO3 in which you just embed the content). Whereas, on tumblr, everything happens on your dash, on Dreamwidth, a lot of the activity takes place in the comments to individual journal and community posts, so it takes a while to adjust (from either end).
Anyway, because it takes a while to find communities and friends and things, here are some links:
Fandom calendar aka pimping central for all fannish creative events (v useful even if you don’t want to be on DW): https://fandomcalendar.dreamwidth.org/
A couple of these are fairly quiet, but all have people on them who are still around, and some are very active, and these are just a handful from my profile list!
It’s miserable when these things happen (speaking as someone who took a long time to stop clinging to LJ and suffering through all the various LJ-pocalypses, and it was seriously distressing), but the internet is a big place, and there are lots of good fannish things out there, and different ways to interact (this is just the one I know and like best, and I hope that maybe some people will also enjoy it, despite the unhappy circumstances).
I don’t post adult content, but I know and follow a lot of blogs that do. If you don’t like the changes@staff wants to make regarding NSFW imagery, be sure to let them know!
I don’t intend to stop using Tumblr but that’s going to be pretty much inevitable if everybody else does, so…here are some other places you can find me, some a lot more regularly than others (but maybe more regularly in the future if fandom migrates there). generally speaking, I’m 100indecisions everywhere except sites where that was already taken or nobody was allowed to start usernames with a numeral.
Twitter: mari_shepard (public) and 100_indecisions (private and only occasionally used, but feel free to request to follow if we already know each other at all; I sometimes use this to vent about work or family stuff)
For the sake of moving your stuff to other places.
First, consider backing up your blog. They’ll send you a back up of every single post on your blog in a file via email, though it takes some time and be a really big file for some. You might not need or want it, depending on your blogging style.
Tumblr Original Post Finder (jetblackcode.com/TumblrOriginalPostFinder/) ((not linked for obvious reasons for tblr’s censoring))
It will look like this when you type in your URL and press enter.
You can then go through and see which ones you’d want to save, or you can go back and filter by number of notes (for example, it can find all posts with 10+ or 100+ notes or whatever you desire). I plan on saving them to a document in order to post later to alternative websites, wherever we end up moving.
There’s not a lot of ways to speed the process up, but this is what I have. I hope it helps.
anybody know if there’s a way to like…partially back up your blog, maybe to only get original posts? or even filter your general searches to original posts so it’s easier to find stuff to manually save? because I’ve been on this site since like 2010 and I have reblogged a lot of stuff, and Tumblr’s been sitting on “backup processing…” for at least three hours now.
tonight’s main task: trying not to hate myself for not getting enough done during my surprise four-day weekend
if I’d spent more of it cleaning up my trashed room, I’d feel better about this, but that is…one of the things I did not really do
I just got this amazing pin from Punky Pins on Etsy and I’m already in love
