October approaches!

In celebration of our cozy online community, I present to you WHUMPTOBER – 31 Days of deliciously painful prompts for your creative pleasure. Visual art, writing, editing – post whatever inspires you!

Treat (or rather, torture) your whumpees to some tantalizing tropes and tag your work with “whumptober“ so others can enjoy your stuff!

(The challenge kicks off on October 1st, feel free to participate as much or as little as you like. DM me if you have Qs. This post will circulate my blog a few times as we near the end of September. Good Luck and Happy Whumping!)

WHUMPTOBER COMETH

What an enabler

to do this weekend, for real:

  • try to get used to the second set of trial contacts, which…seem to have the same problems as the first brand, so far  actually this is just on hold until I get some eyedrops or something
  • convince Scully to eat more
  • make sure my @maximoffficexchange fic is, you know, actually ready to be revealed
  • work on the second one I still want to do
  • write a bunch more of those ACLU voter postcards, because I still have over 100 to go and I should really mail them back on Wednesday
  • finish Loki’s staff and The Final Pam’s axe
  • ideally, do some other cosplay work too, probably either The Final Pam’s dress or wig, because Senshi Con is in…one week
  • finish touchup on current Etsy commission so I can mail it on Monday
  • leave more voicemails for legislators
  • work at least a little more on the donor research project for Alyse Galvin’s campaign

I’m sure this is all fine

As someone who works in therapy for a living, I can confirm this is 100% accurate

@cosmicdwarf

For Traitor: neck retraction exercise. While lying in bed with your head flat against the mattress, give yourself the biggest double chin you can. Repeat 10 times.

For Jackass: stop hiking your shoulders up to your ears. This is pretty much a stress thing, it’s human instinct to protect our neck when we’re under stress so that predators can’t get at it. Easiest way to do that is be elevating the shoulders, so. Periodically take not of where your shoulders are at.

Absolute Fuckwaffle: stretch out your chest. The rhomboids on the back work to keep our shoulder blades back, so when we’re hunched forward they are constantly straining to do their job. Unfortunately it’s not as simple as telling you to stand up straight, since our pectorals get chronically tight and prevent us from doing so. Step one: pectoral stretches. Hold for at least 20 seconds.

Asshole: Superman exercises. Like the rhomboids, the ESGs are straining against the slump. Stretching the chest will help them, too, but then you e got to strengthen your back. Do 20 of those per day.

traitor tried to murder me last night and fuckwaffle is always up on my shit

I’m gonna try these tips

@ailuric

to do today:

  • make final edits on my @maximoffficexchange fic…partly so I can focus on the second one I want to write
  • work on that second fic, ideally
  • glue and spray-paint the axe for The Final Pam
  • spray-paint Loki’s staff
  • also, figure out the right height for it and cut it down
  • finish Black Suit Loki’s second dagger, which isn’t even really for Senshi Con but it’s fairly simple and I’d like to have it done
  • leave another voicemail for Murkowski about Kavanaugh
  • work on some of those 150 ACLU voter postcards
  • clip both pets’ nails, which is likely to be challenging where Scully is concerned
  • get a picture of Scully with my paw-print tattoo
  • go to Planet Fitness, maybe, since I never did last week
  • work on a couple small gifts
  • more on the donor research project for Alyse Galvin
  • idk some SWTOR would be nice but that seems PRETTY UNLIKELY

I’m sure it’s totally possible to do all this (…and shower, because I haven’t done that yet) in the next 9 hours and I’m not actually setting myself up for failure

things I need and/or want to do a bunch of work on in the near future, all at basically the same time:

  • cosplay. so much cosplay (Sept. 22)
  • final edits on my @maximoffficexchange fic (Sept. 14)
  • ideally, a second Maximoff Fic Exchange fic, which I’ve barely started (also Sept. 14)
  • something for @grandthorkiday because @loxxxlay is great and also why the hell not (Oct. 21)
  • the fic where Thor gets dusted because for real, it’s almost done, I think
  • a fairly simple Etsy commission (idk, soonish)
  • at least a couple gifts involving craft stuff (…Christmas? although I need to figure out several gifts in general a lot sooner)
  • donor research project for Alyse Galvin’s campaign (as much as I can as soon as I can)
  • a letter to the editor about Kavanaugh (real soon)
  • 150 postcards to ACLU voters (within the next two weeks, ha ha I may have been overly ambitious here)
  • the little Infinity War Avengers Academy fic I meant to write ages ago, kind of forgot about, and then recently remembered I did actually want to write it (soon, because it should be short but also the game seems to be on its way out)
  • Funko Avengers Academy Thor (soon because see above)
  • 3.75" Avengers Academy Loki action figure, forgot I meant to do that whoops (soon because ditto)
  • followup to “I am a time bomb ticking away the hours to blow your world apart”
  • another one from Loki’s POV
  • make more stuff to list on Etsy before the holiday season really gets going (soon)
  • a lot more SWTOR (and fic, but mostly the game itself), because I’m paranoid about that going away soonish too
  • also like…my actual day job

If you don’t have means to a therapist or mental health professional

Check out therapistaid.com. There’s worksheets there that you can download for free.

Of course it would be a lot more beneficial if you have a therapist to help you through it but not everyone has access to one.

It’s a free site where you can have free downloads of worksheets on many things.

If there’s something there that you think would be helpful, print it out and complete the worksheet on your own.

It’s hard to be accountable for yourself but at least there’s a way for you to have some insight and work on yourself.

Also if you use these in conjunction with the app Wysa

therapistaid is great, i get resources from there to use with my clients. here are some others

I hope this could help the anon from last Rant Tuesday when they said they couldn’t afford therapy. I hope they’re still lurking around my blog to see this 💖

autismserenity:

Here’s how to do it:

Relax the muscles in your face, including tongue, jaw and the muscles around the eyes

Drop your shoulders as far down as they’ll go, followed by your upper and lower arm, one side at a time

Breathe out, relaxing your chest followed by your legs, starting from the thighs and working down

You should then spend 10 seconds trying to clear your mind before thinking about one of the three following images:

You’re lying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but a clear blue sky above you

You’re lying in a black velvet hammock in a pitch-black room

You say “don’t think, don’t think, don’t think” to yourself over and over for about 10 seconds.

The technique is said to work for 96 per cent of people after six weeks of practice.”

This is why classes need library instruction

Student: I can’t find any scholarly articles on this subject!

Me: Okay, what’s the subject?

Student: Creating a culture of sharing in west-coast technological companies.

Me: Alright, and what/where have you tried searching?

Student: I searched “creating a culture of sharing in west-coast technological companies” on the library website!

Me:

I’m still mad about this because it happens frequently. Students at all levels of education need library and research instruction–they should get it before graduating high school, they should be getting it in several different classes in college, and there should be something in grad school–seriously, there are people in my master’s program who don’t know anything besides Google.

And don’t say “they should have learned in [previous level of university education].” Do you think every person continues education within a few years of their first degree? THEY DON’T. Even if they did get a then-good introduction to research, you think nothing changed between 2008 and 2018? How about the doctoral student I met today whose last degree–and last experience with academic libraries–was in 1996? How about the guy in my master’s cohort who got his bachelor’s degree in 1987?

Because look. See that very specific topic the student wanted? There may or may not be actual scholarly articles about it. But here are a few things you can do:

  • First, zoom out. Start broad. Pick a few phrases or keywords, like “tech companies” and “culture.” See what comes up.
    • Actually, back up. First, does your library’s website search include articles, or do you have to go into a database? My library’s website searches some of our 200+ databases, but not all. And you’ll need to find (in advance search or adjustable limiters that pop up after your initial search) how to limit your search to scholarly and/or peer-reviewed articles.
  • What other keywords are related or relevant? For the search above, you could use a combination of “silicon valley,” “company/ies” or “organization/s,” “sharing,” “collaborative,” “workplace culture,” “social culture,” “organizational culture,” and those are just the ones I can come up with off the top of my head.
  • Did you find something that looks promising? Great! What kind of subjects/keywords are attached (usually to the abstract, sometimes in the description section of the online listing)? Those can give you more ideas of what to search. Does it cite any articles? Look at those! Some databases (ilu ProQuest) will also show you a selection of related/similar articles.
  • If you’re researching a very specific topic, you may not find any/many articles specifically about your subject. You may, for example, have to make do with some articles about west-coast tech companies’ work cultures, and different articles about creating sharing/collaborative environments.

That said, this student did the right thing: they tried what they knew to do, and then reached out for help.

They tried what they knew to do, and then reached out for help.

I get goddamn professors pulling this shit, there is not one single level in the academy where research literacy isn’t lacking.

Oh hey this is my job!

So I work at a community college as a reference librarian (adjunct only so far, but here’s hoping) and while we do sit at the reference/information desk and answer student questions, our main job is to teach research classes. Throughout the semester instructors in other departments schedule class periods (sometimes one, sometimes multiple) and bring their students into the library for a class on research – based on whatever assignment they are working on at the moment. We work with the instructors to tailor that class (or scaffold it, for multiple sessions) to the research they need. We also go out to high schools and teach research classes there.

At least in my county, this program is unusual – most other colleges in the area don’t offer this type of collaboration between the library and the rest of the faculty. There’s plenty of faculty members who tell us their students don’t need help with research and then we get students from their classes coming in on their own to get that help and I’m sure there are plenty who don’t. (*glares at nursing program* Y’all are obsessed with evidenced-based practice for goddsakes!!)

Most of my classes cover exactly those bullets above (seriously, that’s great advice): start broad. Write down your research question(s) and underline the important words. Those are your first keywords. Brainstorm synonyms and related words too. Ask a librarian to show you how to use library databases. If you’re a student, you pay for those resources and they are MAGICAL. Try combining keywords using boolean operators: AND makes a search narrower, OR broadens it out, NOT eliminates terms. Only use quotes around keywords if you want those specific terms in that order. Use limiters (date, subject headings, full text) If one search doesn’t work, try another. It’s called RE-search for a reason. (Etymologically speaking, that could be bullshit, but it’s a great thing to tell students who aren’t interested in the ACRL framework’s “Research is iterative” spiel.)

TLDR: If you’re a student, go talk to your librarians, explain your topic, and they will be happy to help you make a research strategy and find the resources you need. (Also, look for libguides – my director has a thing against them but they’re amazing.) Any academics reading this ramble, connect with your library and see if you might be able to have a librarian teach a research class. It’s so helpful to students. Some of them even get EXCITED about research!

okay, so, Senshi Con is in sliiiightly more than two weeks, and in that time I have kind of a lot of cosplay work to do, mostly because everything I planned ended up being at least a little more complex than I expected

Opera Loki:

  • actually try vest and make sure it looks okay, although given that I haven’t found anything else, it might not matter; also maybe pin lapels back
  • cut down pool cue for cane
  • spray-paint pool cue gold
  • scrape the Star Wars label off the little light-up lightsaber bubble wand I’m using for the blue jewel, and cut off the bubble-wand part, and maybe dump out the bubble solution, and remove as much of the handle part as possible
  • figure out a good way to attach it to the pool cue somehow??
  • use its plastic packaging, some craft foam, and paperclay to make sort of a housing for it at the top of the staff, and attach that, and paint the whole mess gold
  • bonus: buy or make Tesseract earrings, but buying them would probably take too long to get here, and lbr I won’t have time to make anything

The Final Pam:

  • make sure the mullet wig I bought will actually work, and then either cut off the long hair or exchange it for a different wig
  • add a couple layers to the skirt, which probably means breaking out the sewing machine, heavy sigh
  • add ribbon/cord/rickrack to bodice to emphasize nonexistent boning and generally make it look more accurate, and probably also cover up what I’m predicting will be a messy job sewing on the additional skirt layers
  • buy ribbon/cord/rickrack to begin with
  • add part of feather boa to the collar of the coat, and more to the wrists (probably just a little hand-sewing here)
  • cut up plastic pirate sword and glue it to plastic axe to extend the blade
  • add some paperclay to smooth out the seams, if necessary, unless I think I can get away with not doing that; also then I’d need to do some painting
  • cut down the axe handle
  • spray-paint it brown I guess? and try to use brown cloth to wrap up part of the handle? or like…electric tape, if we have some?
  • punch holes in coffee can so I can add a strap of some kind and use it as a purse
  • print out Slocum’s Joe logo and glue to coffee can
  • figure out a way to wear Metal Husband. maybe I can like…sew him into the top of the wig? I was going to get Roachie because I thought surely some Halloween place would have a giant cockroach prop but noooo, just tons of spiders and rats
  • figure out how tf I’m going to do that makeup

…and I should definitely do at least some of that today
