Loki – MCU Film Screen Time

Per IMDB:

  • Thor:  Loki <21:15>
  • Avengers:  Loki <21:30>
  • Thor – The Dark World:
    Loki <17:30>
  • Thor – Ragnarok:
    Loki <13:30>
  • Avengers – Infinity War:
    Loki <3:45>

If my math is correct, that’s a grand total of <77:30>.
For comparative purposes, Thor’s time in Ragnarok alone is
<58:45>.
Peter Parker / Spider-Man in Spiderman Homecoming, <76:15>.

Loki’s screen time across all the MCU films consists of one hour, seventeen minutes and thirty seconds.

Allow that to sink in. Let it marinate in your mind juice a bit. Wow, right?

First, what a HUGE impact for a character with so little actual screen time (GO TOM) across FIVE films. Second, no wonder why we’re all so desperate for more. Third, we’re about to get SIX TO EIGHT HOURS of that dude up there.

This is so weird to me because I’d assumed he had more screen time in Ragnarok than TDW. I suppose I just had that impression because he was with Thor for quite a bit of the film, compared to TDW where his screen time was mostly in a few specific scenes.

I have so many feeeeeeeels I keep going back and forth between kind of bouncing on my hands and biting my nails (symbolically, that is, in reality I haven’t moved from my bed). Please don’t fuck it up, please give us the Loki storyline and content we deserve, please let him be alive, please please please don’t fuck it up

Dear lord, I don’t go on tumblr for like, a day, and I come back to find the fandom losing its collective shit, the Loki TV series confirmed, and the first tweet in years from one Tom Hiddleston.

So my first reaction is:

TV series! With Tom Hiddleston! Hopefully this means Loki is alive! Or coming back to life! Woo!

Second reaction, brain dumpy thoughts/concerns:

– I wish it was on Netflix instead of Disney – like, I know the movies are Disney and Agents of SHIELD is technically Disney (ABC) but I can’t seem to rid myself of the child-like connotations of, like, a Lizzie McGuire type TV show with a stupid theme song. Netflix shows are darker, more gritty and real, plus, potential crossover with the Defenders? Jessica Jones? Heck yes. So, yknow … there’s that. But, I guess we’ll take what we can get.

– This has to mean Loki’s alive, right? Unless they plan to CGI Tom to look like he did in Thor 1 and have the show take place in earlier canon, which seems like a lot of trouble to go through for an entire TV series (some scenes in a movie, sure, but 8+ hours of show?).

– I hope it’s not some alternate universe/timeline version of Loki, but a more plausible guess might be that A4 sees the heroes reverse time, Loki never died in the first place, they fight Thanos again and defeat him this time (with some Avengers casualties, Thor maybe?) and then after that, they all go on their separate ways, leaving our Loki to travel around and have adventures across the universe while grieving Thor (because, like, holy angst, Batman, sign me up for that).

So, yeah, I’m basically just hoping that this means Loki is alive and the timeline of the show is post A4, and that it’s more like SHIELD or the Netflix shows than the Disney brand would otherwise imply.

– I hope we get some involvement from Joss Whedon and (maybe?) Kenneth Branagh (I mean, he’s done TV stuff before, isn’t that how he even met Tom Hiddleston? I could see him behind the scenes, especially if it’s a miniseries, like TNM). And I hope that the fucking Russos stay far, far away from it.

– Since Loki is the progatonist, I hope we get to see more of his powers and his magic, that we explore more of his Jotun background, that we see him make some real friends of his own (although I’m not necessarily here for a romantic pairing, Loki is too prickly, but maybe a character like Verity from AoA, a best friend who values him in ways Thor never did [sorry Thor]), that we get some answers on what happened to him in Thanos’s captivity, that we get it confirmed that he was tortured/mind controlled prior to Avengers, and some flashbacks or dream sequences with Frigga (some big name cameos can’t be too hard, right?).

– I also hope part of Tom Hiddleston’s contract/agreement to be on this show means he gets some creative input or control, because no one loves/understands Loki like Tom loves/understands Loki.

Ooh. Yes. I like all of this. I esp. like your idea of when it might be set. The question of “where’s Thor?” in all this is… interesting.

The more I think about it, if the current timeline holds true (A4 will be released in May 2019 and this series won’t be debuting until late 2019) then it really would make sense for the series to primarily take place after Thanos’ defeat in A4, with Loki going off to find his place in the universe, as you suggested. Because yeah, where’s the interest/drama in setting it prior to Thanos’ defeat at that point? They have so much to draw inspiration from, just from the newer comics alone (AOA onward), so it’d be silly to rehash too much…

That said, I think there’ll likely be at least a few scenes in the tv series set concurrently with IW+A4.

Reason being: I’m envisioning that Current!Loki after his IW ‘death’ has been working behind the scenes to help collect the Infinity Stones— moving between timelines or into an alternate universe, possibly coordinating with Strange. Maybe acting as a secret ally to Avengers and Co. without them fully knowing. (I mean… when the Avengers need re-assembling, who’re you gonna call?) We know Loki’s not above letting Thor think he’s dead in order to Hide From Thanos and Get Shit Done.

But I presume Marvel doesn’t want Current!Loki’s involvement in A4 to outshine Captain Marvel and the main Heroes— especially if Avengers!Loki is also back on the scene. Even at a projected 3 hr run time, there’s probably not much room for two Loki’s in A4. So unless they pleasantly surprise us, I’m sure Current!Loki’s involvement will be at most limited to a couple crucial senes— possibly just enough to reunite him and Thor and give him a bit of a role in taking down Thanos without pulling too much focus. (haha, good luck.)

In my mind, the TV series almost guarantees a limited Current!Loki presence in A4; I can see him riding in with the cavalry towards the middle/end of A4, with little to no explanation— specifically to keep the fans thirsty for the tv show. (So prepare to be frustrated, maybe? Haha!) Marvel knows how much we STILL want to hear about what happened to Loki after the Bifrost— and they know we’re gonna be gagging to know how Loki escaped death (or at least, made it work for him.) It’d be easy enough for them to use that content to provide a jumping-off point for the tv series, before whisking Loki off into a new plot.

(Seriously though, TV gods— please give us a scene or two of IW Loki interacting with his younger self! Or if nothing else, more magic and space travel and Jotun content, for the love of all that is holy.)

The man has spoken! I am… nervous and excited.

Also, this gives me cause to think my theory re: this series taking place in an alternate timeline (potentially pulling some ideas from AOA/the more recent Thor runs) might be not so far off the mark? If certain spoilers about A4 are to be believed…

My other running theory (which may or may not be mutually exclusive, tbh!) is that this series — or the general idea of it— has been in the works for several years and was meant to fill in the gaps left by the MCU regarding Loki’s time being dead/‘dead’ during Infinity War and the years following…

I mean, Tom knew about his death in IW for like 2+ years prior (before or early on in Ragnarok’s production, right? Someone fact check me.) So many of the other actors didn’t find out until the day of, or close to. Why make Tom have to keep that secret for so long unless Marvel was already trying to get him onboard for a series on a new platform under development? It would explain basically everything about his cryptic comments since the beginning of the IW hype.

And I absolutely believe Marvel would intentionally fuck with Loki’s fans and enrage them with his confusing and bizarre IW death, all with this endgame in mind. Granted, I had originally assumed they were working up to some strange reveal in A4, but this might well be in lieu of that… aka Marvel realizing that there’s so much interest in Loki but not enough time to tell his story on screen. (Same with Sam+Bucky, Wanda, etc.) They are too smart to pass up on that money and they love generating buzz and controversy…

Anyway, I’m just not gonna be surprised if this was the plan all along even before/early on in Ragnarok production. These things don’t happen overnight. Now here’s hoping it’s actually decent and that, say, Tom has a producer credit… 😉

Also seriously who the Fuck is gonna be writing /directing this??!?!?

Asking for a very interested friend

Hybrid!Tom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hybrid!Tom ??? Oh shit….. we’re dead

Wtf y’all didn’t notice this til now? It’s all I’ve been able to think of every time I see a photos of him that was taken in the last 5 months.

Well the Loki series wasn’t officially confirmed until today, so before that it would’ve been speculation based on more speculation
