Do you know of any video games with an explicitly lesbian character? Bonus points for each of the following that apply: She’s a happy relationship, she’s NOT a villain, she does not die, she is important/a party member rather than a one-note NPC, or she is the protagonist.

I might be able to come up with a few. Though much of my library consists of games with female protagonists, I don’t specifically aim for lesbian content, so this list is not at all representative – it’s just stuff I happen to have played lately.  I hope you like visual novels!

(Note that this list includes both lesbian and bisexual protagonists, though in the latter case I’ve tried to pick ones where it’s possible to end the game in a non-tragic relationship with a woman.)

  • Black Closet
    – A dice-rolling strategy sim where you play as the leader of an autocratic student council. There are
ways for it to end happily, but there are also many ways for it to end
poorly, and your political enemies may use the protagonist’s
orientation against her, should they discover it. Arguably breaks your
“no villains” rule, as the protagonist has definite villain vibes in
spite of being the player character.

  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – A run-and-gun shooter with heavy loot grinding elements. One of the four playable characters, Athena, is a lesbian – her orientation is textually explicit, but not particularly relevant to the story. (She does turn up engaged to marry a woman in another game in the series, albeit as an NPC; as far as I’m aware, she’s consistently single during her tenure as a playable character.)
  • Even the Ocean – A semi-nonviolent momentum based puzzle platformer with VN story segments. The protagonist can start a relationship with another woman during the course of the game. Fair warning: the ending is high on the tragedy scale, though not for any reason related to their relationship.
(In the interest of not spoiler-bombing this blog’s entire readership, message me if you want details.)

  • Ghosts of Miami – An extremely 1980s murder mystery VN in the mode of Phoenix Wright, plus light dating sim elements. The protagonist has both male and female romance options, which end about as well as romance in a detective story ever does (which is to say that most of the people you can date have Issues™, but the same-gender options aren’t particularly singled out for it).
  • Heartbeat – A traditional turn-based RPG with light monster training elements. Great writing and peppy Super Nintendo style graphics. This one’s something of an edge case; while the cast contains numerous women in relationships with other women, and playable party members often flirt with or display crushes on other ladies, the protagonist herself is merely implied to be into ladies.
  • Heaven Will Be Mine – A self-described visual novel about “irresponsible lesbians and giant robots” from the creators of We Know the Devil (see below). Whether you end up in a happy romance depends on how you define “happy” and “romance”; in keeping with the game’s explicit conflation of transgender themes with transhuman themes, some of the endings are pretty esoteric!
  • Her Tears Were My Light – A short and sweet visual novel about the anthropomorphic personification of Space courting the anthropormorphic personification of Time. Some of the endings are happy and some are not, but owing to the protagonist’s nature they’re arguably all canon. Be sure to check out the rest of the creator’s library, too – it’s largely in the same vein, if not quite so high concept as this one.
  • Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt – A retro RPG where you magically enter sick people’s bodies to fight their illnesses bullet-hell style. The protagonist’s highschool ex-girlfriend is a prominent NPC (which here means that she has more than two lines of dialogue), and you can rekindle your relationship at the end, though the latter is partly a joke – the game will let you marry literally any NPC in the game.
  • Queen of Thieves – A light dating sim/dungeon crawler hybrid about a trio of sisters who form an adventuring party to search for their missing mother. I’ll be honest, the writing isn’t great, and the mechanics are only so-so, but I found it to be an engaging time-waster. Plus, there are just enough same-gender romance options to pair every single party member up with a lady, which is novel.
  • Super Lesbian Animal RPG (forthcoming) – A traditional turn-based RPG with a trans lesbian protagonist. You start out already in a happy relationship, and in fact can make out with your girlfriend in battle for stat buffs. This is only a demo for a forthcoming game, so I can’t rule out the possibility that their relationship will end tragically in the full version, but given the game’s tone I rather doubt that will be the case.
  • Ticket to Earth – An oddball cross between a minifigs-on-a-grid tactical RPG and a match-three puzzler set during a planetary revolution. The main character starts out in a relationship with another woman. In the interest of full disclosure, I haven’t gotten around to finishing this one yet, so I don’t know if their relationship ends badly or not – maybe someone who has can clue us in!
  • We Know the Devil – From the same creator as Heaven Will Be Mine (see above), this one’s a visual novel about a trio of girls at a Christian summer camp who’ve been forced to participate in a bizarre ritual that culminates with fighting the Devil. Definitely not light reading; homophobia and transphobia are prominent themes, and there’s some (generally text-only) body horror in places.

I’m personally fond of Ceress and Orea, a rpgmaker type game about a
lesbian fighting her way through the underworld back to her girlfriend

You know, I actually picked up Ceress and Orea when it was on sale back in June, but I haven’t gotten around to playing it yet. (In my defence, my Steam backlog is 200 games deep!) I’ll gladly pass on the rec, though.

Alright shitstains listen up because I just found god in a bottle.

If you’re a nerd like me your body’s probably riddled with a few nerd tattoos yeah? Some of ‘em in some pretty obvious places? Maybe you work in a professional environment that frowns upon body ink? Maybe you’re a cosplayer and you have some revealing outfits that you need to cover up for, yeah? Tattoos that you can’t afford that $30 Kat Von D Tattoo cover up because you’re a cheap broke shit?

Story of my life bud.

Now I have a pretty obvious Squad 11 tattoo, because I’m a Bleach nerd and Zaraki Kenpachi is my husband, and honestly it’s difficult to hide it in some of my cosplays because it’s bright and black and right smack dab on my shoulder. Poor planning on my part but hey, squad represent.

You see that glorious miracle up there? That’s Mehron Tattoo Cover. You see those pictures underneath it? Tattoo? What fucking tattoo?! It’s gone!!!! Vamoosed!!! Like I never got the ink in the first place!!!!

This shit is durable, and I mean durable. It’s completely waterproof and that first picture of my tattoo is actually what it looked like after scrubbing at it with two makeup wipes. TWO. It’s not going anywhere

And the best part?

IT COMES IN DIFFERENT SKINTONES. BAM. WHAT.

I mean it’s not phenomenal but hey at least it’s not just “pale as fuck”.

And you wanna know the second best part?

It’s only 12 bucks on Amazon

Yeah. $12. Not $30. Because $12 is much more reasonable than $30.

As for size reference, that’s how big it is in that third picture right there. It’s honestly the best investment I could have made and everybody should know about it.

Go forth and conquer with your newfound knowledge. You’re all welcome.

As someone who used to chair a stage makeup department, Mehron and Ben Nye are going to be cheaper and better than whatever concealer/orange eye shadow/green lipstick whatever weird tutorial you found or expensive-ass luxury concealer.

Why you ask?

Because Mehron and Ben Nye are stage makeup. They’re meant to give thick, full coverage in one layer that can stand up to cameras and stage lights. Blend it out, powder it, and you’ll never look back. Plus it’s cheap enough that you can buy 2 and mix the perfect shade.

This will work on scars, too.

Just an FYI for folks I know who may want to cover for cosplays, work, or personal reasons.

Honestly this would be a life saver for people with tats stuck looking for jobs in places that frown on them.

I’ve watched people not get jobs at places I work even though their personalities and experience levels were exactly what we were looking for purely because of personal adornment (tattoos, piercings, etc.). So to anyone who might need a product like this, I hope you see this post.

Reblogging in case anyone wants to know how to hide scars specifically.

Pricing your Art

hixxiart:

ishgardian-rose:

hixxiart:

So @dreriart made a post about commission pricing and I thought since it is doin’ the rounds I’d copy-paste this thing I wrote on DA over to Tumblr because for some reason I … never … did that … before??

So one recurring thing I see a lot in the art community in many
different formats is ‘how much should I charge for my commissions?’

What
normally follows is a lot of bad advice. Terrible advice. So I’m here
to give you some good advice and tell you all about how to value your
skillset and price accordingly. This guide has been written with the
intended audience of folk who are just starting out with commissions,
but I hope it will encourage other artists to give themselves a fair
wage and, of course, a lot of this can be transposed over to other
creative professions as well.

So let’s answer the question of ‘how much should I be charging people for work?’

The answer to this is deceptively simple. Here are the questions you need to ask yourself to form an appropriate response:

  1. Where do you live?
  2. How old are you?

For obvious reasons I cannot assist you with these. But once you have these you go to Google and you type in the following:

‘minimum wage per hour in <location name>’

Which is more than likely going to bring up an official government page for your area. Here is the one for the UK since that is where I live. Now
what? Well. How old are you? Because some locations have different
rates for those in different age brackets. But essentially all you need
to do is get the following info:

How much is the minimum wage per hour for my age in my area?

Now
that you have this, how long does a piece take you? You do not need to
be exact. A rough guesstimation will do. This will form your base price
of:

Minimum Wage x Estimated Hours

Therefore if I take five hours to paint a portrait and my min wage is £7.83 then my base price for a painted portrait is £39.15.

That is the absolute minimum you should be charging for your work.

And please take into considerations the following:

  • Working outside your comfort zone will up times taken on a piece.
  • If you’re working with traditional materials, how much for paper/canvas/paint/pens/etc?
  • Minimum wage is quite often garbage anyway.

Whenever
I say this though, I often get a variety of responses in the negatory
for this method. I have answers for each of them. So, let’s run a
sort-of-FAQ on this method shall we?

I’m not good enough to price that high.

Yes you are. Who says? Your government, for starters. Also me. Here’s the thing. No matter the quality of your art, you deserve a fair living wage for your work.

There
are lots of people out there with no understanding of the time, effort
and tears that go into honing artistic skills. Digital art, making
comics, mastering musical composition, sculpting, or whatever it is all
takes time to learn and we are constantly growing and improving. And if
someone wants to hand you money for what you are producing guess what?
You ARE good enough. That is the proof right there. Another human being
wants to give you cold hard cash for something that only you can make.

If
it puts a different perspective on things for you, think of job roles
that would be traditionally minimum wage. Probably the one most people
will go to is ‘burger flipping at McDonalds’ as an example of a low
skill occupation that is stereotypically easy and for those who failed
in life etc. etc. (spoiler alert: it isn’t, but that’s a journal entry
for another day). Why should this theoretical failure of humanity earn
more than you doing a job that ‘anyone can do’? Because art is
absolutely more difficult than cleaning out a McFlurry machine (that’s a
legit fact by the way: I’ve cleaned one of those and art is way
harder).

Also, art is a luxury product my friend. No one needs to
be buying commissions of their MMO character. They want it? They can
play by our rules. And they will.

My family member/friend/random internet guy said that’s too expensive and I should lower my prices.

Your
family member/friend/random internet berk is a fucking idiot at best,
or intentionally trying to get you to undersell at worst. Firstly, I’d
be willing to bet that the person who said this to you is not an
artist. If so, what makes them more qualified than another actual artist
to tell YOU how to price yourself? Because you trust their opinion?
Yeah, but what if their opinion is formed on a factually incorrect
assumption of how much art costs/the time it takes to produce because
that is a HUGE deal in our community right now. And what if they just
want you to stay cheap because it threatens them? Or, as a consumer,
want you to stay cheaper for their own selfish purchasing habits? What
then? Tell them to fuck off.

But there is someone better than me charging less! Why should a client pick me over them?

Spoiler
alert: there will always be someone better than you charging less.
There are thousands of mega quality artists out there. I’m considered
expensive for what I produce, especially as I live in a country with a
currency that translates highly to other currencies. Yet people
constantly ask me for commission work. So what gives? Here are some
reasons why a prospective client might chose you over someone else:

  • You are nicer than they are.
  • You are faster than they are.
  • You’re working in a niche sector.
  • They know you personally.
  • They like your art style better.
  • You have lots of good feedback.
  • A friend recommended you.
  • They aren’t even open for commissions right now.
  • They had a bad experience with that artist in the past.
  • You’re easier to purchase from.
  • You have a larger following and purchasing from you exposes that audience to them by proxy.

There
are lots of other reasons but price isn’t necessarily often the
deciding factor for a lot of clients. Don’t spend your life being
concerned with how other people are better than you or you’ll never be
happy.

I’m nervous about pricing so highly! What if no one wants my art?If
a client doesn’t want to pay you a fair living wage for their luxury
item purchase then that’s a client you can probably do without to be
honest with you.Someone complained about my prices being so high! What do I do?

Refer them to this:

Something worth noting is that minimum wage is normally used for people who are employed (not self employed). So people who work contracted 16, 24, 37 or 40+ hours per week for an employer.

Anyone who is not guaranteed work for a set amount of hours per week is absolutely within their right to charge well over the minimum wage, to cover those hours that they are not guaranteed.

Ever wonder why the plumber is so expensive? Or the electrician? The pc repair guy (£60 to transfer my data? Really? All you do is plug it in and leave it for a few hours..)

That’s why. Because most traders/self employed people don’t have work lined up 9-5 mon-fri (though it’s great news if you do!). If my lovely pc repair tech only charged me £20 to transfer my data, or £5 labour (half an hour) +
>insert price of laptop screen here< to repair my screen, he’s never going to make enough money to stay open, because he doesn’t have people coming and going in his shop all day every day.

If you’re considering being a part or full time artist, then perhaps consider not just how many hours it takes you per piece, but how much of your time you want to spend on commissions. If you plan on spending 20 hours per week on it (not just the art itself, but consider things like liasing with customers and promoting yourself as well) then calculate the hours with the minimum wage (in the above instance, it would be 20 x £7.83 = £156.60). Then you figure in that week you can hopefully (and realistically) complete let’s say, 3 commissions. That would be £52.20 each. Already that’s more than the base price stated above (which I am not saying is wrong at all). But you’ve covered yourself for the additional work and downtime hours, and given yourself a real expectation that of what income you’ll be earning per week.

This is a TOP QUALITY addition to my post.

b) Have some more! (Most of these are traditional, a few of them are more contemporary)

c) I’ve put them all in an actual YouTube playlist, here, for your listening convenience

Oh, hey! My favorite genre! I hope you all like shanties and Irish:

English (but not shanties):
Hills of Connemara – Gaelic Storm
Shady Grove – Crooked Still (a good band for this sort of thing)
The Elfin Knight – Kate Rusby

Shanties/shanty-style sea songs:
Ring Down Below – Storm Weather Shanty Choir
South Australia – The Kilkennys
Barrett’s Privateers – The Real McKenzies (modern but you’d be hard-pressed to tell)
Blood Red Roses – Storm Weather Shanty Choir
10,000 Miles Away – The Seadogs

Irish:
Dúlamán – Anuna
Nil Na La – Solas
Óró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile – Seo Linn
Si Do Mhaimeo I – Méav Ní Mhaolchatha and Mairead Nesbitt

Instrumental:
The Landlord’s Walk – Blair Douglas
Gravel Walk – The Rogues (WOW what a jam!)
O’Sullivan’s March – (Linked is The Chieftains’ version, here’s the Boston Pops version I grew up on)

Bonus Macedonian song: Sto Mi et Milo – Kitka (a great group if you’re interested in Eastern European music)

Thank you for this post. This is amazing.

It also helped me find the video for the herding call that brought all the cows to the singer. Link here.

I have complied the above on Spotify, with substitutions or omissions if I just could not freakin’ find the song. There’s some extra versions of stuff on the list, too! Everything after “O’Sullivan’s March” are my own additions.

to do today:

  • type up and organize what I have so far of my @grandthorkiday fic, which is nearly everything, and either finish and post the whole thing today or if there’s enough to split into a couple chapters, just…do that and post the first chapter
  • write at least 10 postcards to voters
  • also text some voters maybe?
  • leave voicemails for my legislators about the Saudi Arabia situation and this new bullshit trying to erase trans people
  • bring my tires in from my car after getting them changed yesterday
  • try to unfuck iTunes? idk I had to do this just a few months ago and it took forever (had to delete and reload my entire library because the existing one got corrupted or something) so I’m not wild about the idea, even aside from the fact that it happening again indicates there might be another underlying problem
  • other…things…? I feel like I’m already forgetting something but I’m pretty sure this is all the most urgent/important stuff at the moment

things I have done today so far:

  • went to health fair and got free flu shot and bloodwork
  • stopped at VCA to return Scully’s leftover kidney-support food
  • went to Midas because they have a Food Bank bin, where I dropped off several containers of baby food (also leftover from Scully)
  • got a free donut with a coupon, and bought an overpriced mocha because I felt bad just getting the free donut without buying anything, so in general it probably wasn’t a good deal, and if I’d been thinking I would’ve chosen something cheaper before they asked if I wanted to buy something >_<
  • went to Michaels for more cheap postcards to send to voters but found…nothing (there was a pack of Halloween postcards but I wasn’t sure how well that would work, especially since I couldn’t read them)
  • visited the adoption clinic at Petco, where I donated the reusable dog diapers we don’t need anymore, met some dogs (I especially like this cute little girl, although this little guy was really friendly too aaaaand now I’m especially tempted because Dazar could be shortened to just Daz and that is a really stupid reason to be interested in a specific dog but I am genuinely tempted), talked to the people there about adopting again in the nearish future, made tentative arrangements to help socialize a litter of puppies (!!!), and got some free canned cat food with a Petco coupon
  • went to Walmart, where I dropped a couple pairs of ancient glasses in the Lions Club bin, looked for cheap postcards (no), tried to find a replacement watch (no, costs less online), and finally got another power bank for my phone, because Amazon won’t ship those to Alaska anymore apparently
  • went back to Petco to donate the canned cat food to the rescue group running the adoption clinic, because my cat is fine with dry so their cats can probably make better use of it, but also for some reason I didn’t think of this before I left the first time
  • stopped at Value Village to drop off another armload of donations (and buy a costume thing)
  • read through training info for the text campaign I signed up to do tomorrow for the Missouri Democrats

tomorrow I plan to

  • visit a different rescue group’s adoption clinic, which I realize also isn’t a great idea but I waaaant to
  • scold Marvel for firing Chuck Wendig
  • file comments on this plan to drastically limit protests in DC (comment deadline is Monday) and this proposed rule change that would lift restrictions on how long kids can be held in immigration detention
  • sign up for @marveltrumpshate (deadline is tomorrow)
  • actually do the texting shift for the Missouri Democrats
  • get a quick Etsy order ready to mail and maybe work on another one
  • work on the donor research project for Alyse Galvin
  • try to figure out why my iTunes library is apparently fucked up again
  • sign up for more texting to voters

this…might be overly ambitious but I’M GONNA TRY

and right now I should have the place to myself for the next few hours, so I am going to

  • write some more postcards to voters, since I do still have some left
  • work on my @grandthorkiday fic because oh shit it’s due in a week
  • finish my Silent Hill 3 replay, if I still have time
